Eligibility and enrollment in Iowa

Am I eligible for Medicaid in Iowa?

Iowa Health Link, Hawki, and Iowa Health and Wellness Plan are all Iowa Medicaid programs. They help qualified residents get access to affordable health insurance.

You may be eligible if you:

Are under the age of 21

Are a parent living with a child under the age of 18

Are pregnant

Are in need of treatment for breast or cervical cancer

Are age 65 or older

Have a disability according to Social Security standards

Are between the ages of 19 and 64 with an income at or below 133 percent of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL)

Are resident of Iowa and a U.S. citizen

Find out if you’re eligible for Medicaid by taking a quick assessment on Iowa’s Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) website.

If your family’s income is too high to meet the income requirements for the Iowa Health Link program, your children may still qualify for health benefits through Hawki. Check your family’s income in the Hawki income limits table to see if your children are eligible.

How do I enroll in an Iowa Medicaid program?

To apply for healthcare, visit the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Services Portal. For more information, you can also visit their Apply for Services page.

After you’re approved for one of the state Medicaid programs (Iowa Health Link, Hawki, or Iowa Health and Wellness Plan), you’ll get an approval packet in the mail. Your packet will include an enrollment letter with the name of your assigned managed care plan. If you were assigned to Wellpoint, we hope you’ll stay with us.

To switch to Wellpoint

If you were assigned to a different health plan, you have 90 days to switch. After that, you must have a "good cause" reason to switch health plans. Call Iowa Medicaid Member Services at 800-338-8366 or locally at 515-256-4606 (TTY 800-735-2942) Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and tell them you want Wellpoint as your managed care plan.
