What is a Wellpoint Benefits Prepaid Card (flex card)?
A Wellpoint Benefits Prepaid Card (flex card) is a prepaid benefits card that works just like a credit or debit card. It’s available with most Wellpoint Medicare Advantage plans and can help you pay for goods. These include groceries,1,2 utilities1,2 like water and electricity, over-the-counter health items like vitamins and toothpaste, and much more.
What can you buy with a flex card?
If you’re eligible, you can use it to help pay for goods approved by your plan, which may include:
- Over-the-counter health items such as toothpaste, vitamins, and more at participating retailers.
- Groceries1,2 such as fresh meats and vegetables, frozen meats, dairy items, canned goods, and more at participating stores.
- Assistive devices such as handrails, shower stools, and more.
- Out-of-pocket costs related to your dental, vision, or hearing needs (flex account).
- Utilities1,2 such as gas, water, electric, cable, or cell phones (flex account).
How do I get a flex card?
You’ll have to enroll in one of our Medicare Advantage plans to qualify. Think of your flex card as a nice perk for having a Wellpoint Medicare Advantage plan.
Not all plans include a flex card, and benefits may differ based on the plan you choose. Your doctor may need to confirm you qualify for certain benefits. Unused benefit allowances do not roll over monthly or annually.

1Members may receive a monthly or quarterly allowance in the form of a benefits prepaid card to pay for a wide range of approved groceries and utilities. Unused amounts will expire at the end of the month or quarter. Benefits vary by plan.
2Depending on your plan, the benefits listed may be available through the Medicare Advantage Value-Based Insurance Design Model or to eligible members as Special Supplemental Benefits for the Chronically Ill (SSBCI). You may qualify for SSBCI if you have a high risk for hospitalization and require intensive care coordination to manage chronic conditions such as Chronic Kidney Diseases, Chronic Lung Disorders, Cardiovascular Disorders, Chronic Heart Failure, or Diabetes. For a full list of chronic conditions or to learn more about other eligibility requirements needed to qualify for SSBCI benefits, please refer to Chapter 4 in the plan’s Evidence of Coverage.
